Paris Saint-Germain Face an Uncommon Problem: Scoring Drought in French Ligue 1

“It’s a mix of beauty and frustration,” states the team's head coach. The PSG boss has a tricky relationship with how his club's league matches play out. In PSG's matches, one team attacks and the other sits back. “Breaking down deep defenses appeals to me,” he asserts. “This is the game situation I know best. I appreciate the diversity of football approaches. While it differs from our philosophy, I comprehend and embrace it.”

Dealing with deep defenses is unavoidable for PSG; it's their constant situation, due to the skill gap created by financial imbalance. Their superior ability generally prevails and the defensive wall is broken with mixed ease. Yet this term has proven more difficult.

Game Dominance Yet Poor Output

The Parisians have maintained 72.5% possession in the French league so far this term. Facing Nice in their recent match, they had over 76% possession and made 760 passes, versus just 182 for Nice. By half-time, the Portuguese midfielder had numerous ball contacts – merely six short than the complete opposition side – but PSG struggled to make their domination tell. At halftime, opposition defender Bah, whose header was cleared off the line by his teammate, had been the most dangerous.

This performance wasn't isolated. They had shared points in three of their previous four Ligue 1 games. Dominating possession with 71% against Strasbourg, but were reliant on a dying moments Mayulu leveler to salvage a point. Although possessing 77% possession against another French side in midweek, they found the net only once and were finally tied. Approximately 33% of the way into the season, PSG are just fifth in scoring in Ligue 1 – behind Marseille, Lille, Monaco and Strasbourg.

Forward Line Problems

It is a result of the special treatment that PSG receive, but also shows a real issue. Their attackers are struggling. Ousmane Dembélé’s 29 strikes last season helped PSG win Ligue 1 and the Champions League; A young forward scored 14 occasions in the league; The talented youngster hit 16 across all tournaments; and Their winter signing scored several times after his winter transfer.

The forward claimed the golden ball and, while it is debatable that the national team player is indeed the global standout, it is difficult to argue that he was not the top performer of the 2024-25 campaign. He has just five strikes in 12 appearances this season. He encountered a hamstring injury while on national team service in early autumn, which led to a conflict between PSG and the national squad that has seen the connection between club and country deteriorate. He was unavailable for around a month and a half of action as a result, but he still doesn’t look right. After the win over Nice, he was seen clutching his hamstring. “The pain is intense,” he told teammate Achraf Hakimi.

Injury Concerns

The PSG coach says Dembélé will be fit to face Bayern Munich this week in the Champions League but, while he returns to full fitness, other players have to step up. Unfortunately, Doué cannot help. The young attacker was also hurt in September. He was recovering to his best when he was affected by another thigh injury, which is expected to rule him out until next month. Their winger is a valuable player to his team but he often reserves his top displays for the important matches in the continental competition; he is yet to score in Ligue 1 this season. Barcola, PSG’s top scorer in all competitions this season, has just a single strike in his last eight appearances and is in a dry spell. Something of a purple-patch forward, the scoring will surely resume, but he isn't the solution to be the goalscorer in this expensively assembled PSG attack.

The Portuguese striker got the decisive goal against Nice but will he remain in the lineup in the team?

This was the role given to the Portuguese when he joined in last year. The international forward hit the century of 100 matches for PSG against Nice, but he has come off the bench in over 50% of those appearances. With nearly half his total after entering as a replacement, he has effectively embraced the role of the “impact player”, somewhat owing to his limited contribution when picked, but mostly due to his boss's unwillingness to start with a out-and-out forward. “How come I score frequently as a substitute? Well, simply because my appearances are mainly from the bench,” remarked Ramos after the match.

Critical Moment

As scoring has decreased across the frontline, the match-winning strike has given his boss decisions to make. The striker failed to convert several opportunities before scoring his final and deciding the game, but the fact that their prime opportunities came to him is revealing. He’s an instinctive poacher and that is what PSG were acquiring when they made a significant investment. “He's a crucial squad member for us because he is constantly prepared for every match, whether he starts or not,” said their coach. “Five minutes of Gonçalo on the pitch are valuable time.” The moment might have come for the super-sub to play a major part.
